Discovering Stanley: The Heart of the Falkland Islands
Port Stanley, the starting point for our Volunteer Point Penguin Tour, often called Stanley, is the charming capital of the Falkland Islands, located on East Falkland. This small town, home to over 2,000 residents, blends British charm with rugged, remote beauty. Colorful houses line the waterfront, and the Union Jack waves proudly in the breeze, reminding visitors of the islands’ rich British heritage.

A Bit of History:
The Falkland Islands have a storied past, with sovereignty disputes between Britain and Argentina culminating in the Falklands War of 1982. The conflict lasted 74 days, resulting in the deaths of 649 Argentine and 255 British military personnel. Today, the islands are a self-governing British Overseas Territory, and the locals proudly celebrate their unique culture and history. The war’s legacy is still visible around Stanley, with memorials and museums that tell the story of resilience and determination.

Things to Do in Stanley:
Falkland Islands Museum: Dive into the islands’ fascinating history, from early settlements and maritime heritage to the 1982 conflict. Exhibits also highlight the diverse wildlife and unique ecosystems found throughout the islands.

Volunteer Point Penguin Tour: A Wildlife Lover’s Dream 🐧
While Stanley was delightful, the highlight of our Falkland Islands adventure was undoubtedly our trip to Volunteer Point. This remote paradise is home to one of the largest king penguin colonies outside of Antarctica, and the experience was nothing short of magical.

The Journey There: Getting to Volunteer Point is an adventure in itself. We joined Jimmy Curtis Touring for a thrilling Land Rover 4×4 journey with our driver, Sean. Who took us across rugged, roadless terrain. The bumpy ride through wild landscapes, including peat bogs and rolling hills, made the destination even more rewarding. Along the way, we encountered stunning coastline views, flocks of native birds, and even glimpses of wild sheep grazing in the distance.

Meeting the Penguins
Volunteer Point is home to three beautiful penguin species:
King Penguins: Regal and majestic, they stand tall and proud, creating a striking sight against the backdrop of the Falklands. Their bright orange markings and stately demeanor make this rookery or waddle of King penguins a favorite for us and many visitors to Volunteer Point.

Gentoo Penguins: Playful and curious, they waddle along the shoreline and make their homes in the dunes. We watched them dive into the surf with surprising speed and grace.

Magellanic Penguins: Shy and petite, these little ones peek out from their burrows, adding to the charm of the colony. Their distinctive black bands and burrowing behavior make them unique among the penguin species.

Watching these penguins in their natural habitat was a humbling and heartwarming experience. From caring for their chicks to their playful antics along the shore, every moment was pure magic. The sound of their calls and the sight of them nesting or nurturing their young created memories that will stay with us forever.

Exploring More of the Falkland Islands
While Stanley and Volunteer Point are highlights, the Falkland Islands offer much more for the adventurous traveler:
- Carcass Island: Known for its stunning landscapes and abundant birdlife, including the Falkland steamer duck and the black-crowned night heron.
- Sea Lion Island: This island is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. It is home to elephant seals, sea lions, and various bird species.
- Pebble Island: Famous for its beautiful pebble beaches and historical significance from the Falklands War.
Each island has its unique charm, offering opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and immersing yourself in the untouched beauty of nature.

Practical Tips for Visiting the Falkland Islands
- Best Time to Visit: The Falkland Islands are best visited during the austral summer (October to March), when the weather is milder and wildlife is most active. December and January are peak months for seeing penguin chicks.

- Getting There: Most visitors arrive via cruise ships, but flights from Punta Arenas, Chile, and RAF flights from the UK are also options. LATAM operates weekly flights from Santiago, Chile, with a stopover in Punta Arenas. The Royal Air Force (RAF) also operates flights from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire to Mount Pleasant Airport in the Falklands, with a refueling stop in Cape Verde. While primarily for military personnel, a limited number of civilian seats are available. However, these flights can be unpredictable due to military needs, making them a risky backup option for travelers.
- Important Note for Cruise Passengers: Due to the limited flight options, it is crucial for cruise passengers to return to their ship on time. Missing your ship could leave you stranded in the Falklands for up to a week, facing high rebooking fees, accommodation costs, and logistical challenges. Always plan shore excursions with ample time to return, and consider booking tours through your cruise line to ensure coordination in case of delays.
- Currency: The local currency is the Falkland Islands pound, but British pounds are widely accepted. Credit cards are accepted in larger establishments, but cash is recommended for smaller shops and tours.

- What to Pack: Layers are key! The weather can be unpredictable, so bring warm clothing, waterproof gear, and good walking shoes. Don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses, as the sun can be intense even on cooler days.
- Health and Safety: The Falkland Islands are generally safe, but it’s essential to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and evacuation, especially if you plan to visit remote areas. We wrote a recent blog post that walks you through everything you need to know about travel and global health insurance.
